After Long Silence: A Woman's Search for Her Family's Secret Identity
Fremont, Helen
Book Number: 29293
ISBN: 0749919787
Publisher: Piatkus Books, 1999
8vo hardcover 322pp. very good / very good d/w. Review: In her mid-thirties, Helen Fremont discovered that, although she had been raised in the Midwest of the US as a Catholic, she was in fact the daughter of Polish Jews whose families had been exterminated in the Holocaust. Fremont's tender but unsparing memoir chronicles the voyage of discovery she took with her older sister, ferreting out information from Jewish organisations and individuals, worrying about its impact on their angry, overpowering father and reticent, nightmare-plagued mother. nnFremont has the courage to paint a nearly unsympathetic portrait of her parents' secretiveness and initial reluctance to have their children dredge up the past; as the narrative unfolds, readers comprehend the tormented roots of their behaviour, without forgetting the psychological problems it created for their daughters. Fremont's recreation of her parents' ghastly ordeals--her mother narrowly escaping the murder of nearly every Jew in her hometown; her father surviving six years in the Soviet gulag--is a triumph of dogged research and sympathetic imagination. Her book tells a deeply American story of identity lost and reclaimed, complete with Fremont coming out to her parents as a lesbian, yet it also achieves understanding of the dark European past and its icy grip on her family. --Wendy Smith nnSynopsisnHelen Fremont was raised as a Roman Catholic in America, only to discover in adulthood that her parents were Jews who survived the Holocaust. Delving into the secrets that held her family together in a bond of silence for more than forty years, she recounts a remarkable tale of survival.

Walking with the damned : the shocking murder of the man who freed 30,000 prisoners from the Nazis
Schwarz, Ted
Book Number: 26237
ISBN: 1557783152
Publisher: New York Paragon House 1992
8vo hardcover 326pp. very good+ / very good+ d/w. From Kirkus Reviewsn Tedious account of riveting events surrounding Count Folke Bernadotte's release of prisoners from German concentration camps and his subsequent assassination, by Schwarz (co-author, The Peter Lawford Story, 1988, etc.). This is a story of unlikely allies--the idealistic Boy Scout leader Count Folke Bernadotte and the sinister SS leader Heinrich Himmler--who join in an even more unlikely enterprise: the freeing of Jews from concentration camps during the final months of WW II. The problem here is that Schwarz isn't very good on people: he utterly destroys Bernadotte (even for his own uses) by failing to plant any seeds of greatness, or even growth: ``Bernadotte's even being a gofer seemed to tax Bernadotte's abilities''; he was ``a self-centered playboy''; his sister ``knew her brother was immature, a spoiled rich boy with limited intelligence.'' Bernadotte, says Schwarz, ``seemed to envision the SS a little like summer sleep-away camp counsellors gathering the children together for parents' day.'' But somehow this incompetent cut a deal with the Nazis, and Schwarz gives no clear sense of how the miracle occurred. Jumping hither and thither in a kind of quasi-epic style, Schwarz obscures his story with a good deal of retold, peripheral material on the Goebbels family, and on events like the assassination of Heydrich and the subsequent razing of Lidice. Nor is Bernadotte's ``maturing process'' very clear; it's been rendered virtually impossible by the early description. The fascinating Yitzhak Shamir, dominant presence in the Stern Gang (generally assumed to have assassinated Bernadotte), never really comes into focus either, but his motives do: Bernadotte, proceeding on the Wilsonian notion of self-determination, proposed an Arab state that would allow Jews ``special rights.'' Like Wilson, he irritated everyone, especially the Stern Gang. A huge drama full of players on the grand scale, none of whom comes alive within the confines of this treatment. -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. Testimony : Contemporary Writers Make the Holocaust Personal
Rosenberg, David
Book Number: 26236
ISBN: 0812918177
Publisher: Random House (Times) 1989
8vo hardcover 511pp. very good / very good d/w. From Publisher's Weekly - Publishers WeeklynIn this sequel to Congregation: Contemporary Writers Read the Jewish Bible , Rosenberg asks 26 notables when they first learned of the Holocaust, how it shaped their careers and other questions. In a keen essay, Phillip Lopate censures what he sees as the Jewish preoccupation with the Holocaust to the exclusion of other human and even other Jewish disasters. Lore Segal fled Austria and lived with five different English families in eight years; the Holocaust drew black American Julius Lester and German Susanne Schlotelburg to Judaism. Unfortunately, many pieces are labored, fragmented and self-indulgent, banal or romanticized trivializations, with the nadir being Gordon Lish: ``Yes, I am being paid for this. Yes, I am glad I am being paid for this. No, I did not say that I did not want to be paid for this. No, I did not say go give instead what you are paying to me to somebody who really paid with his bones for this.'' First serial to Esquire, Tikkun and Partisan Review; Jewish Book Club selection. (Dec.)nnFrom Library JournalnRosenberg, who edited the recent Congregation: Contemporary Writers Read the Jewish Bible ( LJ 11/15/87), has now edited a new collection of essays by 27 contemporary Jewish writers on how the Holocaust affected their lives--emotionally and intellectually--and how they came to terms with it. Contributors include Herbert Gold, Alfred Kazin, Anne Roiphe, Julius Lester, and Marge Piercy. The writing is consistently of a high level. This unusual anthology will be of value to anyone interested in Holocaust studies and Jewish literary life in America. For most collections.-- Robert A. Silver, Shaker Heights P.L., OhionnFrom Edith Milton - The New York Times Book Reviewn{This is} an artful patchwork of contrasting opinions and personalities. We may be invited to a few too many, and too banal, Pilgrims' Progresses to Jewish identity, but in the aggregate these essays transcend the obvious paradox at the heart of any anthology that offers to recollect genocide in tranquillity. One is given a small course in primary sources--Primo Levi, Paul Celan, Tadeusz Borowski--by some good and very varied instructors. And whatever shortcomings some of these essays display individually, they add up, finally, to auseful compendium of the difficult disagreements in contemporary Jewish thought. I should add, too, that several of these essays, in and of themselves, are very good indeed, a handful brilliant; and that even the worst take pains toavoid the conventional and the academic.
