Fittler, Brad:  Freddy
Book Number: 40501
HarperCollins Publishers January 2005 8vo softcover 320pp very good+. Index. Illustrated with photo's. There have been few better players in the game of Rugby League than Brad 'Freddy' Fittler. He's the boy from a broken home in Sydney's welfare wasteland who pulled himself up by his football bootlaces to captain his State and his country. Fittler, who retired after 16 seasons and almost 450 games at the very highest level, never forgot where he came from. He retained the same larrikin good nature that endeared him to his mates in his days at the Penrith club, which he helped win its first premiership. Later, with the silvertails of the eastern suburbs, he took part in another premiership win. He captained NSW to State of Origin victory and made a celebrated comeback to the Blues. Fittler's rise is much more than a sports story. It examines the issues that divide Australia. Like few others, he's straddled that divide. Drugs and beer and wild parties punctuated his youth. There was the tragedy of the death of one of his closest mates; the Super league saga; his own drunken episode outside a Sydney police station; being jailed in Mexico; the narrow escape from a woman out to get him; the male stalker - all these stories and more are told with characteristic honesty. It's a story that will make you laugh and make you cry. It offers a rare insight into the workings of some of Australia's best sporting teams.

Solly, Ross:  Shoot out : the passion and the politics of soccer's fight for survival in Australia
Book Number: 46732
Wiley 2004 8vo softcover 324pp near fine. Index. Illustrated with b&w photo's. n this book, ABC journalist Ross Solly traces the political infighting, nepotism and incompetence that has strangled the growth of the sport in this country for decades. The roll call of people who've tried to reform soccer, only to walk away in despair, is impressive. Even political heavyweights like Neville Wran, Nick Greiner and David Hill have had to admit defeat in the face of Machiavellian administrators and high farce. Following transfer scandals, resignations and damning top-level inquiries, Prime Minister John Howard had seen enough. He sent out an SOS ? get Frank Lowy back! Billionaire Lowy, CEO of the Westfield Group, had early success in establishing soccer in Sydney and nationally. Now, after dictating terms including a handpicked board of management and a war chest of $15 million, Lowy has presented Australian soccer with a radical plan for reforming the sport. So it's time for the final penalty shoot out to decide the fate of Australian soccer for decades to come. Can Lowy finally succeed in creating not just a vibrant national competition, but also a strong national team that can strut its stuff in time for the World Cup in Germany in 2006?

Koutoufides, Anthony:  Kouta
Book Number: 48163
Hardie Grant Books 2008 8vo softcover 258pp index, colour illus. near fine, review copy stamp on fep. Beginning his AFL career in 1992, Kouta quickly established himself as one of the most versatile and athletic players ever to play the game. Of Greek and Northern Italian heritage, Koutoufides made an early choice to switch from track and field athletics to Australian Rules football. A pin-up boy not only at Carlton, in November 2006 he won the final of Channel 7's hit show Dancing with the Stars. Kouta has never been far from the news (his reported $1 million contract caused a huge stir), but there have been very few players who could match his sheer dominance in the late '90s, and at his best he is simply indestructible. Koutoufides was the Brownlow Medal favourite in 2000; he won the Carlton Best and Fairest in 2001 and 2005; received All Australian honours in 1995 and 2000; and was one of the best on field in Carlton's 1995 Grand Final win. Koutoufides has felt the exhilaration of the highs but also suffered the lows. He was the Carlton captain during the tumultuous period of 2003-2006, when the club was in financial crisis, and twice finished bottom of the ladder. In Kouta, Anthony speaks candidly about his amazing football career, his life outside of football and how the game has changed during his time at the top.
