| Lacey-Johnson, Lionel: Point Blank and Beyond Book Number: 47566 Airlife Publishing 1991 8vo hardcover 276pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. One of the major contributions to the success of Operation "Overlord" in 1944 was the extensive Allied bombing of the German Army's supply system in Northern France and Belgium. Point Blank and Beyond is a detailed account of the part played by bombers of the Royal Air Force and the 8th U.S. Army Air Force in this controversial campaign, known as the "Transportation Plan." During the preparation of his book, the author interviewed many former aircrew and French civilians, including resistance members. They have provided much valuable information on this largely unrecorded aspect of World War II.

| Middlebrook, Martin: The Berlin Raids: R.A.F. Bomber Command Winter 1943/44 Book Number: 47568 Viking 1988 8vo hardcover 407pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. No other bombing campaign in World War II against a single target was pressed so relentlessly for so long, and at such a cost, as British Bomber Command's seven-month campaign to break the German will by destroying Berlin. More than 10,000 sorties were launched, more than 30,000 tons of bombs dropped. Six hundred and seven British aircraft were lost. Balancing the cost of the campaign against advantages gained, the official Royal Air Force historian concluded early on that the Battle of Berlin "was more than a failure. It was a defeat." Middlebrook ( The First Day on the Somme ) isn't so condemning, although he judges that Luftwaffe night-fighters in combination with ground anti-aircraft defenses hurt Bomber Command more than Bomber Command harmed Berlin. His straightforward narrative covers the 19 major raids, with a detailed description of three in particular, and includes recollections by British and German airmen as well as German civilians who weathered the storm that lasted throughout the winter of 1943-44. Photos. nCopyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc. nnProduct DescriptionnThe Battle of Berlin was the longest and most sustained bombing offensive against one target of World War II. 19 major raids between August 1943 and March 1944 and more than 10,000 aircraft sorties dropped over 30,000 tons of bombs on Berlin. The city was not destroyed, however, and the RAF lost over 600 aircraft and their crews. The controversy over whether the battle was a success or failure has continued to this day. The author has interviewed more than 400 people in this study in an attempt to bring together both sides of the story - the tactics of the bombing force and the experiences of ordinary people in the target city. The battle is described month by month, and tactical factors that helped first the bombers and then the night fighters are identified. The experiences of the people of Berlin are also recounted, showing how bombs destroyed homes and families, affected morale and reduced the German war effort. Martin Middlebrook is the author of many books on military history including "The First Day on the Somme", "The Bomber Command War" and "Operation Corporate", a study of the Falklands War.

| Rolfe, Mel: To Hell and Back. True life experiences of bomber comand at war Book Number: 47571 Grub Street 1998 8vo hardcover 192pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. Following the success of Looking into Hell, published in 1995, Mel Rolfe has researched another twenty dramatic but true stories of gallantry in World War Two. Some of them defy belief - like the RAF bomb aimer who was blown out of his Liberator over Warsaw at 400ft without a parachute and made a poignant return in 1989 to witness the unveiling of a memorial on the crash site. Others defy logic - like two men of the same crew who survived a terrible crash, neither aware of the other's existence but both saved by a tolling of the same church bell.

| Carrington, Charles: Soldier at Bomber Command Book Number: 47572 Leo Cooper 1987 8vo hardcover 240pp index, b/w illus. very good / very good d/w. Hitler's Ardennes offensive of December 1944 was spearheaded by a panzer regiment of the 1st SS Division. Attacking at dawn in their King Tiger tanks, the 1st SS made a gallant attempt to break through the Allied lines. As on other occasions, the SS combat achievement was marred by atrocities. The regiment's commander, Jochen Peiper, had ordered them to drive on recklessly and to give no quarter. When an inconvenient number of American prisoners had been acquired, SS men opened fire on them, killing 86 captive Americans. Peiper and some of his men were brought to trial after the war. Over-zealous American prosecutors committed many irregularities and members of the unit only suffered minor penalties, despite the horrendous nature of their murderous atrocities. Veteran military historian Charles Whiting offers a vivid account of the largest single atrocity committed against American P. O. W. s on the western front in World War II, as well as a detailed narrative of the forward units of the SS Leibstandarte "Adolf Hitler" during the Battle of the Bulge. Massacre At Malmedy is a fitting and descriptive memorial that is a permanent part of the military history of the European theatre. -- Midwest Book Review --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. nnProduct DescriptionnIn December of 1944, during the final flush of the German breakout in the Bulge, several SS divisions led by Colonel Johann Peiper swarmed the American encampment at Malmedy, in the Ardennes. American prisoners, wounded and unwounded, were summarily executed, as were many Belgian civilians, under the charge that the village had harbored American troops. nnColonel Peiper and a number of his lieutenants were subsequently charged for their roles in the massacre, and sentenced to hang. But incredibly, as with the majority of convicted war criminals, they were spared.
