Western, David:  In the Dust of Kilimanjaro
Book Number: 33650
Washington, DC Shearwater Books 1997 8vo hardcover 297pp index, b/w illus. very good+ / very good+ d/w. Kilimanjaro slowly takes shape as the night sounds die, its glaciated peak tinged pink in the early light. A solitary wildebeest stares motionless as if mesmerized by the towering mass; a small caravan of giraffe drifts across the plain in solitary file, necks undulating to the slow rhythm of their gangling stride. There is an inexplicable dÈjý vu about the African savannas, as if some subliminal memory is tweaked by the birthplace of our hominid lineage. -from In the Dust of Kilimanjaro. In the Dust of Kilimanjaro is the extraordinary story of one man's struggle to protect Kenya's wildlife. World-renowned conservationist David Western-who grew up in Africa and whose life is intertwined with the lives of its animals and indigenous peoples-presents a history of African wildlife conservation and an intimate glimpse into his life as a global spokesperson and one of Kenya's most prominent citizens.nnBeginning with his childhood adventures hunting in rural Tanganyika (now Tanzania), Western describes how and why the African continent came to hold such power over him. In lyrical prose, he recounts the years of solitary fieldwork in and around Amboseli National Park that led to his gradual awakening to what was happening to the animals and people there. His immersion in the culture and ecology of the region made him realize that without an integrated approach to conservation, one that involved people as well as animals, Kenya's most magnificent creatures would be lost forever. His accounts of his friendships with the Maasai add a personal dimension to the book that gives the reader new appreciation for the centuries-old links between Africa's wildlife and people. Continued coexistence rather than segregation, he argues, offers the best hope for the world's wildlife. Western describes how his unique understanding of the potentially devastating problems in the region helped him pioneer a new approach to global wildlife conservation that balances the needs of people and wildlife without excluding one or the other.nnMore than an exceptional autobiography, In the Dust of Kilimanjaro is a riveting look at local and global efforts to preserve species and protect ecosystems. It is the definitive story of wildlife conservation in Africa with a strong and timely message about co-existence between humans and animals.

After deportation because of their open criticism of the government's soft stance on wildlife conservation, they find their way back to their research station to discover the remains of hundreds of poached elephants. Thus they begin a long struggle to raise consciousness about preservation among the officials, who live off black market ivory, and the villagers, who depend on elephant meat for food. Mark's obsession with catching the poachers leads to vicious confrontations and to intense strain in his relationship with Delia.

Tutu, Desmond:  The Rainbow People of God: South Africa's Victory Over Apartheid
Book Number: 35576
Doubleday 1994 8vo hardcover 286pp index, b/w illus. very good, remainder mark on bottom edge. / very good d/w. Through a collection of Archbishop Desmond Tutu's speeches, letters, sermons and off-the-cuff remarks, this book sketches the story of South Africa from 1976, when apartheid oppression was at its peak, to the birth of democracy in the 1994 elections. As it recounts the Soweto youth rebellion in 1976 and the difficult years up to 1989, when the country experienced steadily-growing resistance to apartheid and the campaign of civil disobedience, readers are offered a reminder of the severity of South Africa's social and political problems during that time. The book also reflects the sense of national euphoria felt upon the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990, tempered by the subsequent confusion and violence of the transition to democracy. The book's editor is a prize-winning South African journalist and Tutu's media co-ordinator.

Kassindja, Fauziya:  Do They Hear You When You Cry?
Book Number: 36313
Bantam Press 1998 8vo hardcover 518pp. very good, outer page edges browned, owner's name on fep. / very good d/w. The story of Fauziya Kasinga, who fled her African homeland to escape female genital mutilation and forced polygamy. Fauziya's progressive father had shielded her from the tribal practice of polygamy and female genital mutilation in Togo, Africa, but when he died in 1993, everything changed. At the age of 17, she was forced to marry a much older man who already had three wives, and to undergo preparation for female genital mutilation without any painkillers or antibiotics. Days before the ritual was to take place, Fauziya's sister helped her escape to Germany, and from there she travelled to the United States seeking political asylum. When she arrived in the US she was stripped, shackled and imprisoned for 16 months by the Immigration and Naturalization Service. Layli Miller Bashir, a second-year law student assigned to Fauziya's case, found a broken, emaciated girl who had been shuffled from prison to prison, was suffering from an untreated bleeding ulcer, had been subjected to several strip searches, and denied the right to follow her daily religious practices. She enlisted law professor, Karen Musalo, an expert in refugee law, who assembled a team to fight on Fauziya's behalf. Fauziya was finally granted asylum on 13 June 1996, a landmark decision.
