Torney-Parlicki, Prue:  Somewhere in Asia: War, Journalism, and Australia's Neighbors, 1941-75
Book Number: 35725
Sydney, Australia UNSW Press 2000 Large 8vo softcover 305pp index, b/w illus. very good, top spine bumped, pen mark on fep. From 1941 to 1975, as a series of military conflicts gripped Asia and the Pacific, Australian journalism was dominated by war reporting from the region. Torney-Parlicki (history, U. of Melbourne) argues that the reporting went beyond the usual discussion of military strategy and, in an important way, was the first real examination of Asian cultures by Australian society. She looks at the representation of the Japanese as official enemy during World War II, the responses to Asia during the early Cold War period, and the portrayal of the Vietnam War, to name a few. While straight journalism is the focus of the work, commentaries in magazines and other media by academics, tourists, and other non- journalistic writers are also explored. Distributed by ISBS.
