Book Number: 42876
Zeus Publicatons 2004 8vo. Softcover. 291pp. Ex-library, with stamps and marks. Reading copy. On average, every day of the year a ship over 3000 GRT either is sunk or disappears without trace. Although many of these events are accidents or weather related, many more have a human hand involved. Set into the background of the South Pacific and Asia; the ‘Sea Eagles’ or ‘Mucky Ducks’, as they preferred to be called, was a small organisation that initially earned its money by investigating the suspicious demise of some vessels and trying to prevent the deliberate destruction of others. However over a period of time their work grew to include many other aspects of the dark side of the world at sea. This included arms and people smuggling, drug trafficking and insurance fraud. In later years they met their biggest challenge as Modern Pirates grew to be a global menace.

Sanders, Michael S.:  The Yard: Building a Destroyer at the Bath Iron Works
Book Number: 43456
HarperCollins October 6, 1999 8vo Hardcover in d/w. 272pp very good. Index. Illustrated end pages. Illustrated with diagram of ship and in-text b&w photo's. Michael S. Sanders describes the birth of a ship with the love of a parent, relating how the naval destroyer USS Donald Cook was "assembled over four years piece by piece, steel plate by steel plate, from the first half-moon slices of keel to topmost radar mast, almost by hand." The Yard is a land-based tale focusing on the thousands of men and women in Bath, Maine, who practice the old craft of shipbuilding. Their business has adapted itself to modern ways, but Sanders intriguingly shows how ancient Phoenicians would nevertheless recognize important parts of today's construction process. Sanders spends plenty of time explaining what goes into making a ship: the engineering, the materials, and the labor. He also tells of an industry in peril, as American shipyards compete against foreign builders whose governments subsidize their work. Yet The Yard is ultimately about ordinary people who build: "electricians, pipefitters, welders, braziers, tinknockers, riggers, anglesmiths, straighteners, blasters, and shipfitters" plus "legions of naval architects, draftsmen, and marine engineers." The Yard may lack the dazzle of Blind Man's Bluff and its stories of submarine espionage, but it will hold a similarly strong attraction for readers drawn to human endeavor on the open sea and what makes it possible. small remainder mark.

Hansen, Erik Fosnes:  Psalm at Journey's End - A Titanic Story
Book Number: 43492
Seeker and Warburg 1997 8vo softcover 352pp very good. Among the many myths surrounding the 1912 sinking of the Titanic was the notion that the ship's band played on until the end. Norwegian novelist Erik Fosnes Hansen has seized upon that story as the hinge for this fascinating, if at times distressing, book about the musicians aboard the fatal voyage. The fictional band members, who hail from across Europe, find a certain kinship on the vessel besides that of a life spent chasing musical dreams. Their lives, each treated almost as novellas, reflect the tragedies the war will soon bring to Europe. The whole event is played out metaphorically in the tales of simple people involved in tragic events. Skilled research and impressionistic prose are expertly mixed into a poetic, absorbing story in Norwegian writer Hansen's novel. As in the recent Maiden Voyage by Cynthia Bass, the stage is set on the doomed Titanic's voyage from Southampton in April 1912. Hansen's characters are the band musicians, celebrated in Titanic lore, who continued playing as the ship went down. Rather than speculate about the actual people, whose names and lives are known, he has invented characters assembled from diverse parts of Britain, Russia and the continent. The complex past of five of these musicians is woven into the tale of the fateful crossing. These are men drowning in emotional turbulence and desolation, a metaphorical foreshadowing of their actual fate. Their stories are ablaze with the drama of love gone awry and talents not fully realized, but Hansen also uses them to speculate on the larger themes of responsibility and fate, reason and faith. He writes with fierce energy, creating emotional landscapes that may make one think of the evocative scenes and brilliant colors of Turner paintings. In all, it's a brilliant piece of storytelling.
