Gyngell, Allan and Michael Wesley:  Making Australian Foreign Policy
Book Number: 43209
Cambridge University Press September 22, 2003 8vo softcover 300pp very good. Making Australian Foreign Policy should be read by all with an interest in Australian foreign policy. Readers will be informed by the rich descriptive analysis and stimulated, if not convinced, by the conceptual framework. For both of these reasons, the book will make an excellent addition to syllabi on the topic. Outlining practical and theoretical approaches in the making of Australian foreign policy, this text analyzes the processes, structures and calculations involved in policy initiation in an increasingly tense and dangerous international environment. Revealing changes caused by the impact of the various manifestations of globalization, this book is essential for students of Australian foreign policy. It will also be of interest to anyone concerned with foreign policy, diplomacy and international relations.

It's absurd, just because you are a politician's wife, to sit around like a dummy saying nothing or echoing him. You might as well give up living. I came to represent all the ungainly people, the too-tall ones, the too-fat ones and the housebound, as I had been, who'd never get the chance to go to China or Buckingham Palace and who experienced it all through me.

Watson, Don:  Recollections of a Bleeding Heart: Paul Keating PM
Book Number: 44023
Random House Australia 2002 8vo hardcover 756pp index, b/w illus. very good, outer page edges browned. / good+ d/w with small tears on corners. Index. If he had never become Prime Minister, Paul Keating's place in Australian history would still have been assured. He was the Treasurer who deregulated the economy; the weaver of Labour's modern story; its heavy weapon in the parliament. He was also the great enigma - a self-educated boy from Sydney's working class and a defining element of the head-kicking Labour right who loved Paris, Mahler and Second Empire Clocks. Paul Keating did become Prime Minister. In December 1991, he wrested it from Bob Hawke and the bruises from that struggle were part of the baggage he brought to the job; the other parts included the worst recession in 60 years and an electorate determined to make him pay for it. Keating defied the odds and won the 1993 election, and in his four years as Prime Minister set Australia on a new course - towards engagement with Asia, a republic, reconciliation, a social democracy built on a modern export-based economy and sophisticated public system of education and training, health and social security. Widely regarded as a quintessential economic rationalist, Keating's record clearly shows that his vision was infinitely broader and more complex.

Cunneen, Chris:  William John McKell: Boilermaker, Premier, Governor-General
Book Number: 46042
New South Wales Univ Pr Ltd August 2001 8vo softcover 271pp very good. William McKell, the long-serving Labor Premier of New South Wales (1941-47), is in many ways the architect of the great electoral success of the ALP in NSW since the Second World War. - His political life began after the momentous 1916 split in the ALP over the conscription issue, when he became the youngest endorsed Labor candidate for the NSW state election. - Before he turned thirty he had become NSW Minister of Justice, and he eventually won the party leadership in 1939 and led the party to victory in 1941. - McKell played a central role in creating the modern NSW Labor Party, a pragmatic, electorally successful political machine. - Neville Wran described him as "perhaps the most significant political figure in the history of NSW"; like Wran, he cultivated rural as well as urban voters. - After six years as premier he accepted - controversially - Prime Minister Menzies' invitation to become Governor General, a post he filled until 1953. He died in 1985. - This lively account of McKell's life provides a vivid portrait of the development of this important labour movement figure, and a readable insight into New South Wales politics during a key period in twentieth century history.
