| Roman, Ed: Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans and the Java 2 Platform, Enterprise Edition Book Number: 46020 John Wiley & Sons 1999 8vo softcover 722pp index, b/w illus. very good. Amazon.com ReviewnCentering on Sun's Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) 1.1 specification, Mastering Enterprise JavaBeans surveys the range of technologies and APIs needed to use EJBs successfully. Mixing a high-level perspective on EJBs with plenty of practical programming advice, this title makes a good choice for the IS manager or developer planning to use EJBs in future projects.nnThis book succeeds in two notable ways. First, it presents a fine high-level overview describing EJBs and how they fit into today's multitiered, server-side enterprise architectures. The author makes connections between EJBs and other component architectures (such as Microsoft DNA and CORBA). Illustrated with numerous diagrams, these chapters will be useful to anyone seeking to understand the basics of Sun's powerful component model.nnThis title also serves as a programming primer for serious EJB development. In later sections, the author introduces practical advice for creating both session and entity beans, with plenty of nuts-and-bolts advice, including how to work with actual EJB products. (This book also shows you what to look for when purchasing an EJB application server to deploy your bean components.)nnLater chapters delve into transaction management and show how to use Java with CORBA and IIOP. The text culminates in an impressive case study using EJBs and Java servlets to power an e-commerce Web site (complete with an online catalog and a shopping cart). This example is a standout, and it's all you will likely need to get started with EJBs in custom projects. Final appendices cover several APIs and standards in more detail, including RMI, JNDI, and XML.nnIn all, this title succeeds at bringing the EJB standard home to the practical reader. It demystifies EJBs and gives both managers and developers what they need to start solving business problems using this powerful new component model. --Richard DragannnTopics covered: Overview of Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) component model and Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), the EJB 1.1 standard, multitiered server-side architectures, J2EE technology primer: RMI, JNDI, JDBC, JTS/JTA, servlets and JSPs, Java IDL, JavaMail, Connectors, XML, EJB Container and Server products and responsibilities, session beans: stateless and stateful beans, EJB security and component life cycle, entity beans and persistence: bean-managed persistent entity beans and container-managed persistent entity beans, flat and nested transactions, ACID properties, two-phase commits, CORBA and RMI-IIOP and EJBs, e-commerce case study using EJBs and servlets. nnProduct DescriptionnA user's manual for "the best thing since the Java language itself" Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) will radically streamline the application development process. It provides a standard way for developing enterprise-level Java applications. And, best of all, it comes equipped with built-in services like database access, security, and transaction monitoring. With EJB, programmers can simply write the business software and hook it into the EJB services it needs to work. The rush is on to develop EJB compliant applications. Filled with practical, proven tips and techniques, this book offers an overview of what EJB is, how it works, and how to build specific EJB applications. CD-ROM includes sample source code, the EJB specification and supporting code from JavaSoft, demos of EJB servers, and links to other sources.

| various: Maximum Security Book Number: 46030 Sams 2001 8vo softcover 860pp index, b/w illus. very good. Amazon.com ReviewnAttacks against computer systems are very personal--the only cracking technique most site administrators care about is the one that's being used against them at the moment, and it's really hard to cater to that requirement in a book. On the other hand, Maximum Security deserves a close reading because it provides a lot of background on security risks and the "good housekeeping" sorts of practices (turning off unused services, to cite a simple example) that can motivate bad guys to ignore your system in favor of easier targets. There's no doubt that this book's advice will enable you to fend off uncreative, cookie-cutter attacks of the kind detailed on Web sites for attackers. And that's probably enough, unless you have some really enthusiastic enemies.nnThe anonymous author explains most security risks, defense strategies, and security tools in highly readable prose that's mixed with a moderate number of listings (of command-line exchanges and software) and a large number of Internet addresses (where detailed information and software can be found). History lessons--stories of security breaches and how they were stopped, and of product weaknesses and how they were detected--are a big part of this large volume. Readers will put this book down with a solid foundation in Internet security concepts, ready to harden their systems against attack and cope effectively with news of new security risks. --David WallnnTopics covered: How to break into or disable a computer system, and how to defend a computer system from being broken into or disabled. Firewalls, intrusion detectors, log-and-audit utilities, and packet sniffers are covered in detail, as are varieties of attack and the specific vulnerabilities of popular operating systems. nnFrom Library JournalnNetwork administrators need to read this book closely because a lot of aspiring hackers will be reading it closely and will be looking around for somewhere to practice their new skills, e.g., your lan or web server. This book covers in copious detail internet warfare, programming languages, scanners, sniffers, password crackers, trojans, platform security, remote attacks, spoofing, firewalls, and the law. It is a how-to protect book and, by default, a how-to attack book.nCopyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
