Richards, Norman:  JBoss: A Developer's Notebook
Book Number: 46096
O'Reilly Media, Inc. 2005 8vo softcover 149pp index, b/w illus. very good. Reviewn"JBoss is the certified J2EE application server from JEMS (JBoss Enterprise Middleware System) and with JBoss: A Developer's Notebook you'll be able set up and manage your project in minutes. It takes a no-nonsense approach and is the practical guide to JBoss for developers. It's certainly the kind of book that you'll constantly have open on your desk, and to save time they've added in some coffee cup stains on the pages for you! Scribbled notes in the margin also add to the notebook theme, but they are actually useful asides to the main text, which makes it one of the most readable books on the subject. However, some sections might prove a bit lightweight for the coding hardcore." .NET, November 2005 "A daring format which works well, a style that lends to quick reading and progress, and an all-round enjoyable read. I look forward to other O'Reilly books in this series." - Mark Jones, news@UK, March 2006 nnProduct DescriptionnnnThere's nothing ordinary about JBoss. What began as an open source EJB container project six years ago has become a fully certified J2EE 1.4 application server with the largest market share, competitive with proprietary Java application servers in features and quality. And with its dynamic architecture, JBoss isn't just a J2EE server. You can alter the services to make J2EE work the way you want, or even throw J2EE away completely. nnAfter more than a million downloads, many JBoss users are no longer trying it out on internal test boxes, but rolling it out on production machines. JBoss: A Developer's Notebook takes you on a complete tour of JBoss in a very unique way: rather than long discussions, you will find code--lots of code. In fact, the book is a collection of hands-on labs that take you through the critical JBoss features step-by-step. You don't just read about JBoss, you learn it through direct practical application. That includes exploring the server's many configurations: from bare features for simple applications, to the lightweight J2EE configuration, to everything JBoss has in store-including Hibernate and Tomcat. nnJBoss: A Developer's Notebook also introduces the management console, the web services messaging features, enhanced monitoring capabilities, and shows you how to improve performance. At the end of each lab, you'll find a section called "What about..." that anticipates and answers likely follow-up questions, along with a section that points you to articles and other resources if you need more information. nnJBoss is truly an extraordinary application server. And we have an extraordinary way for you to learn it.

Gomez, Paco:  Professional J2EE Enterprise Edition with BEA WebLogic Server
Book Number: 46142
John Wiley & Sons 2000 8vo softcover 509pp index, b/w illus. very good. Amazon.com ReviewnDespite its wordy title, Professional Java 2 Enterprise Edition with BEA WebLogic Server actually is one of the better books that you can get for learning JSP-based programming with Java and Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs). By highlighting practical matters--including setting up and running the popular BEA WebLogic Server, and benchmarking performance--the authors manage to cover the essentials of EJB-based development in a friendly and intelligent style that's ideal for any aspiring Java EJB developer.nnThe focus on hands-on matters begins with installation and configuration of BEA WebLogic Server, one of the more widely used platforms for running EJB applications. Most books cover EJBs more theoretically and leave deployment by the wayside. By focusing on an actual EJB product, the authors can talk about what works and what doesn't work in real applications. For examples, a single case study for a chain of pizza shops gets enhanced in stages, first with a Web front end for ordering pizzas, then with other features--including call-center support, e-mail, and XML. A section on converting an ASP version of a front end for this sample application into a JSP version is a highlight.nnThe latter half of this text turns into a primer on benchmarking. A benchmark (called the Grinder) measures performance, with a wide range of choices for EJBs that run on WebLogic. Different Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) and choices for implementing the applications (for example, stateful vs. stateless EJBs) are tested, and the numbers of concurrent users (up to 400) are varied. The result is a solid glimpse into the choices that give the best performance on WebLogic.nnBesides covering the basics of building e-commerce applications with JSPs and EJBs, this book has a genuinely practical side. The case study is very useful, as is the plentiful performance advice. Smart, friendly, and well organized, this title strikes an excellent balance between presenting information on some of the latest Java technology and APIs, and showing just how to do it on a real EJB platform and with real code. --Richard DragannnTopics covered:nnIntroduction to Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) nGetting started with BEA WebLogic Server: features and administration n"Webifying" existing applications nIntroduction to JavaServer Pages (JSPs) nOverview of BEA dbKona and htmlKona for simpler JSP/servlet development nJSP architectures (Model 1 and Model 2) nUsing Enterprise JavaBeans (EJBs) nSession beans, including stateless session beans nEntity beans (container-managed and bean-managed persistence) nConverting ASPs to JSPs nSending e-mail and the Java Message Service nSecurity issues for Web applications, including authentication, SSL, and authorization nIntroduction to Wireless Markup Language (WML) and wireless applications nStress-testing performance for Web applications nGrinder (custom benchmark for performance testing) nComparative benchmark scores (comparing JVMs, stateful and stateless beans, entity beans, and clustering options for up to 400 users) nCase study for chain of pizza shops with e-commerce features and call centers nJSP syntax referencennnnProduct DescriptionnTechnology Overview nnThe Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE) specification is one of Java's success stories; a standard for enterprise web application development that has wide industry support. nnJ2EE is basically a collection of specifications for web services, business objects, data access, and messaging. They define the way in which web applications communicate with the servers that host them. J2EE focuses on two things - creating a standard that allows web applications to be portable between servers, and giving the server control of component lifecycle and other resources, in order that it can handle issues of scaling, concurrency, transaction management, and security. nnThis book is based a

Krutz, Ronald L.:  The CISSP Prep Guide: Mastering the Ten Domains of Computer Security
Book Number: 46126
Wiley 2001 8vo hardcover 556pp index, b/w illus. very good. Amazon.com ReviewnThe Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) rating is difficult to earn and rare in the marketplace, which means you're a valuable commodity if you've proven your skills by passing the exam. The CISSP Prep Guide, one of only a handful of books on its subject, does a good job of giving readers a feel for the scope of the test and the style of its questions. It's ideal for use either as a preliminary survey of the CISSP subject areas (the test's publisher and the authors of this book call them "domains") for relative newcomers to computer security, or as a pure study guide to help more experienced professionals zero in on the weak spots in their knowledge. Don't expect to do well on the CISSP exam having only read this book. You'll want to have some practical experience and some specialized reading under your belt.nnRonald Krutz and Russell Vines are good writers and fine teachers; they explain the wide-ranging CISSP domains (which have to do with everything from cryptographic algorithms to fire-suppression techniques to legal principles). They take care to explain potentially unfamiliar terms--there's a good glossary in the back of this book--and employ conceptual diagrams well. However, the answer keys for the sample questions that conclude each chapter aren't annotated and some readers will wish for more references to specialized sources. --David Wall nnTopics covered: The subjects covered by the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) exam published by the International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium, including cryptography, access control, security policy, legal matters, and the physical safety of information, equipment, and people. nnReviewn"...fulfils its purpose well and forms a good introduction to the concepts and jargon used in all areas of IT security...worth having as a reference dictionary..."
