Robertson, Don:  Ideal, Genuine Man - Abacus Books
Book Number: 40681
Abacus Books (Sphere) 8vo softcover 304pp very good. Lyrical, sentimental, sexy, violent prole novel, with Robertson's heart doing a thumb's up for his outcasts of rock-bottom naturalism - and with a lengthy, clubfooted foreword by Stephen King, the book's publisher. Robertson (Paradise Falls, Praise the Human Season) abandons his favorite Ohio background and conjures up a nightmarish version of Houston. At 74, Herman Marshall is an arthritic, leaky-bladdered retired truckdriver whose wife Edna lies at home dying of cancer while Herman Marshall (always last-named) tends her, tells her stories from the past, spins any old tale to make her chuckle. It seems that Edna was once unfaithful to Herman Marshall with his brother and had a child, Billy, whom Herman Marshall nonetheless loved and raised as his own. However, Billy had spinal meningitis and died at 17. Complete outcasts, the Marshalls are social garbage, kept going by the shine from a few beers and Edna's marvelous barbecues. At last, Edna is in so much pain that she begs Herman Marshall to kill her, but he won't do it. Herman Marshall grew up worshipping cowboy hero Tom Mix, his squint and his ideal, genuine smile - quite unlike his own "nigger lips," which have embarrassed Herman Marshall and made him the butt of his three older brothers. When Edna finally dies, he gets rolling drunk, stays drunk through the funeral, and two days later, with his ideal, genuine, solid-ivory-dentured smile fixed in place, goes on a saintly rampage, shooting dead all of his friends and acquaintances to save them the old-age grief he's experienced. Rubs your face in the mind of a mass murderer hero while serving up a universe of trivia and despair. Many may think it Robertson's King Lear. (Kirkus Reviews)
