O’Brien, Bill:  Aramoana : twenty-two hours of terror / Bill O'Brien ; [illustrations by Simon Blake].
Book Number: 41981
Auckland, N.Z. Penguin Books 2006 8vo softcover 221pp very good. "New Zealand's worst mass killing ... written by a police officer who was involved" On 13 November 1990 the still, evening air at the tiny Otago seaside settlement of Aramoana was shattered as a lone gunman went berserk, killing thirteen people. It was New Zealand s worst mass killing. Local resident David Gray, regarded until then as a harmless recluse, went to ground. He evaded capture for twenty-two hours before being killed by police in a violent shoot-out. For local residents trapped in their homes and for police attempting to capture Gray it was a time of terror, great danger and individual acts of heroism. This book has been written by a police officer who was involved in the Aramoana tragedy from the start. It contains for the first time the full inside story of the events of 13 and 14 November, including minute-by-minute accounts of the police operation. It features information never before made public, including startling new details about David Gray himself. Scarce

Parnell, Christopher V. V:  The Sunday Smuggler: The shocking true story of an innocent man jailed for over 11 years in Indonesia's most notorious prisons
Book Number: 41998
HarperCollins 2002 8vo softcover 280pp very good. The true story of an innocent Australian's eleven years in Indonesia's most notorious prisons. Christopher Parnell was on holiday with his family in Bali when the unthinkable happened. Their holiday complex was raided and police claimed to have uncovered 12.5kg of hashish. Parnell and a travelling companion were immediately arrested. His companion was later released and left Bali as soon as the charges against him were dropped. While Parnell awaited trial, his friend signed a statutory declaration back in Australia to say that the drugs had belonged to him. He admitted he had been afraid to face Indonesian justice but believed the mix up would be rectified and Parnell released. Instead, Parnell was sentenced to the death penalty. That sentence was later reduced to 20 years and a fine of US$30,000. Over the next 11 years, Parnell was subjected to unthinkable sessions of torture. Left to starve and fight every day for his survival, Parnell became a man forced to eat everything from cockroaches to human flesh.

Lalor, Peter:  Blood Stain
Book Number: 42912
Crows Nest, N.S.W. ALLEN & UNWIN 2002 8vo softcover 314pp index, colour illus. very good. 29th February 2000, Katherine Knight committed an unspeakable act. A mother of four and a grandmother, she seduced and then stabbed John Price 37 times. A former abattoir worker, she skinned him. A loving partner, she cooked him with vegetables, making a soup with his head. Made gravy. Left him on plates for his family. Why? Pricey was her de facto and he wanted out. She didn't like that. People said that most of the time Katherine Knight seemed normal... until she got angry. She was judged to be legally sane when she committed a crime so horrible that the media shied away from the detail. Journalist Peter Lalor covered the trial and wanted to know what made Knight go way over the borderline. In this unflinching account he uncovers the layers of her dysfunction, opening the door of 84 St Andrews Street and taking us into the lives of Knight's ex-partners, her family and the locals of Aberdeen, New South Wales. At the time of writing, Katherine Knight was the only woman serving a life sentence in Australia. She is never to be released.
