| Tucker, Paul Hayes: Monet at Argenteuil Book Number: 25310 New Haven, Conn. Yale Univ Pr May 1984 4to hardcover 211pp very good / very good d/w. From Choice: An original, well-written revisionist analysis of Monet based upon the author's dissertation. Despite Tucker's outstanding scholarship and a generallyplausible thesis, admiration for the book must be qualified. On the central issue he is not sufficiently ahistorical to assure the reader of the accuracy of his interpretations. Searching the municipal records and walking the sitesof more than 170 works Monet painted at Argenteuil, Tucker was obviously charmed. Lacking explicit statements by Monet, ingenious readings of the paintings are provided as confirmation. But the authority of the criticism is depreciated by some arguments. For example, taking note of lack of street lamps in {A.} Sisley's Boulevard Heloise compared to Monet's version with lamps means little when the exact date of their installation during that year is not given. . . . Nevertheless, there is much of importance in this study, and it is recommended for college and university collections. From John Spurling - New Statesman: Whether or not one is entirely convinced by Tucker's thesis, {this} book is indispensable to any lover of Monet's work, if only because it provides a new way of looking in detail at paintings which have become slightly vague through over-familiarity, and it is handsomely and copiously illustrated.

| Escher, M.C.: MC Escher Book Number: 26068 Benedikt Taschen Verlag 29 September, 2000 8vo softcover 96pp near fine. M.C. Escher was born in 1898 in Leeuwarden (Netherlands). He received his first drawing lessons during secondary school from F.W. van der Haagen, who also taught him block printing, thus fostering Escher's innate graphic talents. From 1912 to 1922 he studied at the School of Architecture and Ornamental Design in Haarlem, where he was instructed in graphic techniques by S. Jessurun de Mesquita, who greatly influenced Escher's further artistic development. Between 1922 and 1934 the artist lived and worked in Italy. Afterwards Escher spent two years in Switzerland and five in Brussels before finally moving back to Barn in Holland, where he died in 1972. M.C. Escher is not a surrealist drawing us into his dream world, but an architect of perfectly impossible worlds who presents the structurally unthinkable as though it were a law of nature. The resulting dimensional and perspectival illusions bring us into confrontation with the limitations of our sensory perception.
